Our destination today, across the border in Austria, was the historic city of Salzburg - founded & made rich because of the salt deposits in the area.
Upon arrival we strolled through the Mirabell Gardens on our way to the river & into the Old Town.
Our guide Monika told us about the history of the city & showed us many of it's most important locations including several that featured in the movie The Sound of Music!
There was free time to explore in small groups & to have lunch before we drove to one of the salt mines in the area for a trip underground - complete with miners' coveralls, riding a mine train, & even whizzing down wooden slides & cruising across a lake, both underground!
We were slightly delayed recrossing the border, then stopped for dinner on the shores of Chiemsee before returning to our hotel, ready for bed after a long day out.
